Hypocrisy (nifāq) as one of the most challenging religious concepts and one of the deadliest spiritual and social maladies, has persistently exposed the fabric of Islamic societies to multifaceted threats. The fundamental question is: given the transformation in the nature of hypocrisy—from individual behaviors at the outset of the prophetic mission to an organized movement during the peak of the Islamic awakening—how can one, relying on historical contexts and the environment of the revelation of the verses, extract the methodology of the Qur'an in dealing with this phenomenon? A precise understanding of this issue is not attainable without revisiting the conditions of the Prophet's (PBUH) era and analyzing the connection between the structure of the verses and their context of revelation. The research findings indicate that the Noble Qur'an employs a composite and multi-layered methodology for recognizing, analyzing, and confronting hypocrisy: a semiotic method to uncover contradictions in speech and behavior; a psychological method to probe internal origins such as fear, doubt, and ideological instability; a sociological method to analyze the destructive effects of hypocrisy on social cohesion and public security; an educational-managerial method aimed at offering strategies for controlling and guiding society against the infiltration of deviant currents; and finally, a therapeutic method for the rehabilitation of deviants amenable to reform and for safeguarding believers against ideological maladies. Based on the obtained results, this article, by presenting a systematic model for identifying the behavioral and ideological components of hypocrites according to the context of revelation, takes a step toward anticipating and preventing hypocrisy in Islamic societies. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, the present study, while extracting key propositions related to hypocrisy and revisiting authoritative historical and exegetical sources, undertakes a methodological analysis of the Qur'an in confronting hypocrisy.

Introduction
Hypocrisy (Nifaq) is one of the important and challenging concepts in religious and Qur’anic teachings. Beyond its doctrinal dimension, it also encompasses psychological, social, and managerial aspects. The Holy Qur’an has given particular attention to this phenomenon, explaining in numerous verses the characteristics of hypocrites, the circumstances underlying the emergence of hypocrisy, their behavioral patterns, and its individual and social consequences.
An examination of the verses related to hypocrisy indicates that, within the historical context of the early Islamic period, this phenomenon emerged—depending on the social and political conditions of the Muslim community—in relatively simple and individual forms and subsequently developed into more complex and organized forms. Therefore, understanding the Qur’anic approach to hypocrisy cannot be achieved merely through examining the terminology and statements concerning hypocrites. Rather, it requires simultaneous consideration of the context of revelation, the historical circumstances of the Prophet’s era, the sequence and structure of the verses, and the evolution of the hypocrites’ behavior throughout the different stages of the Islamic mission.
The central question of the present study is to determine the methods and mechanisms through which the Holy Qur’an addresses the identification, analysis, regulation, and reform of the phenomenon of hypocrisy, and to examine how, by drawing upon the historical context and the circumstances surrounding the revelation of the verses, a methodological framework for the Qur’an’s approach to hypocrisy can be reconstructed.
Materials & Methods
The present study is fundamental in terms of its objective and descriptive-analytical in terms of its methodology. The research data were collected through an examination of the verses of the Holy Qur’an and the use of authoritative exegetical, historical, and narrational sources. Subsequently, the set of Qur’anic verses that directly address the subject of hypocrisy (Nifaq) was identified and extracted. In analyzing the verses, the study considered not only their explicit content but also the historical and social circumstances at the time of revelation, the context of revelation (Asbāb al-Nuzūl), the interrelationships among the verses, and the development of the phenomenon of hypocrisy throughout the different stages of the Prophetic mission. Accordingly, the Qur’an’s methodological components in addressing hypocrisy were examined and analyzed at several levels, including semiotic, psychological, sociological, educational-managerial, and therapeutic approaches.
Results & Discussion
The findings of the study indicate that the Holy Qur’an adopts a multidimensional and systematic approach to addressing hypocrisy (Nifaq). At the first level, the semiotic approach enables the identification and differentiation of hypocritical behavior by presenting its verbal and behavioral signs, including discrepancies between words and actions, concealment, deception, false oaths, and the adoption of contradictory positions. At the second level, the psychological approach focuses on the internal dimensions of hypocrisy and considers factors such as fear, doubt, weakness of faith, instability of belief, and the discrepancy between outward appearance and inner reality as contributing factors to the formation and persistence of hypocritical behavior.
At the third level, the sociological approach examines the consequences of hypocrisy beyond the individual level and demonstrates that the spread of hypocritical behavior can lead to weakened social trust, divisions within society, disruption of collective cohesion, the dissemination of rumors, and the weakening of social security and stability. At the fourth level, the Qur’an employs an educational-managerial approach, which involves raising awareness among the believing community while providing strategies for dealing prudently with deviant movements, preventing their infiltration, and preserving social cohesion. Within this framework, the Qur’an does not adopt a uniform and one-dimensional approach toward hypocrites.
Finally, the findings indicate the presence of a reformative and therapeutic approach to addressing hypocrisy. In cases where the possibility of return and reform exists, emphasis on awareness, repentance, behavioral reform, and returning to the right path provides the conditions necessary for change. At the same time, increasing the believing community’s awareness of the characteristics and methods of hypocrites contributes to protecting it against their doctrinal and social harms. Accordingly, the Qur’anic approach to hypocrisy can be understood as an integrated process encompassing identification and exposure, analysis of causes, assessment of consequences, prevention and management, and, where possible, reform and treatment.
Conclusion
Based on the findings of the study, hypocrisy (Nifaq) in the Qur’anic framework is not merely an individual deviation or a disturbance in personal beliefs; rather, it is a multidimensional phenomenon that can manifest across psychological, doctrinal, behavioral, and social levels and, when it becomes organized, can also affect the cohesion and security of society. Accordingly, the Qur’anic approach to hypocrisy is likewise multidimensional and cannot be reduced to a single method.
Accordingly, the model derived from the present study can provide a framework for the systematic study of hypocrisy in the Qur’an and for a more precise understanding of the relationship between the verses, the historical context of their revelation, and the social developments of the Muslim community. Furthermore, by focusing on the early identification of behavioral and doctrinal signs of hypocrisy, analyzing the conditions underlying its emergence, and considering its social consequences, this model can provide a theoretical basis for future studies on the prevention of and response to the phenomenon of hypocrisy in Muslim societies.
