Arabic grammar holds a fundamental place in the teaching of the Arabic language. This research aims to study *al-tawābi‘* (grammatical followers/adjuncts) and their semantic implications in the *al-Qāsi‘ah* sermon delivered by Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (peace be upon him), while uncovering their role in constructing meaning and solidifying the textual structure. The study’s significance stems from the fact that these adjuncts do not merely serve a grammatical function; rather, they act as essential tools for achieving various semantic purposes—such as specification, clarification, emphasis, exposition, and the linking of discourse components. The research employs a descriptive-analytical approach, involving the identification of instances of these adjuncts within the *al-Qāsi‘ah* sermon and their classification into five types: *na‘t* (adjective/modifier), *‘atf* (coordination), *tawkīd* (emphasis), *badal* (apposition/substitution), and *‘atf al-bayān* (explanatory apposition). It then analyzes their grammatical functions and semantic implications within their linguistic and textual contexts. Quantitative results indicate that coordination (*‘atf*) ranks first in frequency (42%), followed by the adjective (*na‘t*) (31%), emphasis (*tawkīd*) (18%), and finally apposition (*badal*) and explanatory apposition (*‘atf al-bayān*) (9%). This distribution reflects the sermon's argumentative nature, which relies on connecting and reinforcing ideas. The study concludes that these adjuncts play a pivotal role in directing meaning and highlighting the sermon's argumentative and rhetorical objectives; furthermore, their semantic significance is inseparable from their context, being defined instead by the syntactic relationships between the components of the sentence. The results revealed that the *na‘t* (adjective/modifier) and *‘atf* (coordination) were the most frequently occurring types of *tawabi‘* (dependent elements) in the sermon, contributing to the expansion of meaning, the achievement of textual cohesion, and the strengthening of the argumentative structure. Meanwhile, *ta’kid* (emphasis/corroboration) and *badal* (apposition/substitution) played a prominent role in reinforcing meaning, eliminating ambiguity, and deepening the impact on the recipient. The study underscores the importance of utilizing modern linguistic approaches to analyze traditional texts and highlighting the close link between grammatical structure and semantics, thereby contributing to the advancement of applied grammatical studies in the Arabic language.

Introduction
Arabic grammar stands as one of the most important disciplines established to serve the Arabic language and safeguard its texts against solecisms and errors. Since its inception, it has contributed to elucidating the relationships binding the words and structures of a sentence; it has evolved into a science that goes beyond merely defining grammatical inflections to interpreting linguistic phenomena and revealing their role in constructing meaning. Consequently, many Arab scholars have emphasized that grammatical inflection is subordinate to meaning, and that the correctness of a grammatical structure is inseparable from the speaker's intended sense—a principle that has made the relationship between grammar and semantics a central focus of both classical and modern linguistic studies. The *al-Qāṣiʿah* sermon stands at the forefront of the sermons in *Nahj al-Balāghah* in terms of importance; it is one of the longest and most stylistically and structurally diverse of his sermons. It addresses theological, ethical, and educational issues—foremost among them being warnings against arrogance and vanity, the exposition of the virtues of humility, the recounting of the story of Iblīs, and references to past nations—all while employing linguistic and argumentative techniques that deeply impact the listener. This richness has made the sermon an ideal subject for studying grammatical phenomena and analyzing their semantic functions.
Despite the abundance of studies addressing *Nahj al-Balāghah* in general—and the *al-Qāṣiʿah* sermon in particular—from rhetorical, stylistic, and intellectual perspectives, research specifically dedicated to the grammatical category of *al-tawābiʿ* (dependent elements/adjuncts) via a combined grammatical-semantic analysis remains limited. This is especially true for studies that link grammatical function to textual context and demonstrate the role of these dependent elements in constructing meaning and achieving cohesion and coherence within the sermon. Hence, there is a clear need for a scholarly study that examines this phenomenon through a descriptive-analytical approach, surveying instances within the sermon and revealing their grammatical functions and semantic dimensions.
Materials & methods
Accordingly, this research seeks to conduct a descriptive-analytical study of *al-tawābi‘* (appositives and related dependent structures) in the *al-Qāsi‘ah* sermon. It aims to identify their types, elucidate their grammatical functions, and analyze their semantic nuances within the context, while highlighting their role in constructing meaning and reinforcing the text's argumentative structure. Furthermore, the study aspires to contribute to the expansion of applied grammatical research and to demonstrate the interplay between grammar and semantics in the analysis of classical texts, thereby opening new avenues for utilizing modern linguistic methodologies to study the Arab-Islamic heritage.
Discussion & Result
This research aims to analyze the *tawābi‘* (dependent elements)—namely the adjective (*na‘t*), the coordinate (*‘aṭf*), the emphatic (*ta’kīd*), and the appositive (*badal*)—in the *al-Qāṣi‘ah* sermon. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach and drawing upon both traditional Arabic grammar and modern linguistic studies, the study seeks to uncover the role these elements play in constructing meaning, achieving textual cohesion, and reinforcing the sermon's argumentative structure. Furthermore, the research aspires to contribute a new building block to applied studies in Arabic grammar and to highlight the importance of leveraging the grammatical heritage in light of contemporary linguistic methodologies.
Conclusion
After examining the instances of *al-tawābi‘* (dependent elements) in the *al-Qāsi‘ah* sermon and analyzing them in light of grammatical rules and semantic context, the research reached the following conclusions:The study demonstrated that the dependent elements in the *al-Qāsi‘ah* sermon do not merely serve a grammatical function; rather, they play a pivotal role in constructing meaning, guiding interpretation, and achieving the text's rhetorical and argumentative objectives. It was found that *al-‘aṭf* (coordination) is the most frequently occurring type of dependent element in the sermon (42%), owing to the sermon's nature—which relies on presenting sequential ideas, linking causes to effects, and reviewing historical events and examples within a coherent framework. The adjective (*al-na‘t*) ranked second in frequency of use (31%); its functions varied—ranging from specification and clarification to glorification and condemnation—and it contributed to highlighting attributes associated with the doctrinal and ethical concepts presented in the sermon.Emphasis (*al-tawkīd*) (18%) served as a linguistic tool to fix meanings in the recipient's mind, strengthen argumentation, and eliminate possibilities of doubt or misinterpretation—particularly in passages warning against arrogance and explaining God Almighty’s established laws regarding His creation.Apposition (*al-badal*) and explanatory apposition (*‘aṭf al-bayān*) (9%) played a significant role in clarifying intended meanings, specifying referents, and transitioning from the general to the detailed, thereby enhancing the clarity and precision of the discourse. The study revealed that the semantic value of these dependent elements does not stem solely from their grammatical structure but is determined by the linguistic and textual context, as well as the relationships linking them to what precedes and follows them within the sermon. Appositives and their related structures (*al-tawābi‘*) contributed to achieving textual cohesion and coherence, linking the parts of the sermon and thereby reinforcing its thematic unity and the strength of its argumentative structure. The study demonstrated that Imam Ali (peace be upon him) employed these structures with precision and contextual appropriateness; the choice of each element aligned perfectly with its intended purpose, reflecting precision in composition, depth of meaning, and stylistic excellence. The research findings affirm that the study of such structures in classical texts should not be limited to grammatical parsing (*i‘rāb*); rather, it must extend to an analysis of their semantic and pragmatic functions, thereby integrating grammatical and semantic studies. The research recommends conducting similar studies on the remaining sermons and letters within *Nahj al-Balāgha*, utilizing methodologies from text linguistics and discourse analysis to uncover the semantic dimensions of grammatical structures in the Arabic heritage and to enrich applied studies in Arabic grammar.
