Place serves as the matrix within which the literary work takes shape, exerting influence over other literary elements such as event, character, and time. This significance does not stem from its limited geographical and geometrical dimensions, but rather from its multifaceted nature. For it is within the domain of place that events unfold, characters move, time flows, and human lived experience gains meaning. Thus, place transcends its geographical dimension to connect with various psychological realms. The importance of this research lies in revealing the position of places in the poetry of Najah al-Arsan, a contemporary Iraqi poet who, alongside his deep belief in the philosophy of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), constitutes an integral part of the Iraqi poetic text. The present study addresses the following research questions: How does place in Najah al-Arsan's poetry transform from a mere material space into a symbolic-semantic system that expresses existential experiences and conceptions? And what impact have the various environments in which the poet lived had on the formation of the symbolism and significance of place in his two collections "A Chance for Snow" and "Jacob of Final Sorrow"? Accordingly, this research employs a descriptive-analytical approach to examine the most prominent and frequently used places in al-Arsan's poetry. The findings of the research indicate that place in Najah al-Arsan's poetry evolves from a purely material space into a symbolic-semantic system carrying multiple connotations at the religious, national, and psychological levels. The diversity of environments in which the poet lived—the village, the committed city, and Baghdad—has enriched his spatial imagination. Hence, places such as Karbala, the Euphrates, the mosque, the ship, the well of Joseph, and the Alqami River come to embody concepts of sacrifice, belonging, resistance, and salvation, creating a poetic experience that renders place a primary agent in the production of meaning and in unveiling the hidden relationships between the self and existence.

Introduction
Place is considered one of the oldest and most significant givens that have entered into the production of poetic meaning. Critics and poets have paid increasing attention to it due to the techniques it provides for shaping artistic vision. Hence, the importance of place emerged in critical corpora, alongside the growing interest of poets in it, as an essential part of the techniques of meaning production, since encompassing and understanding it means encompassing the poet and understanding his poetic requirements, given the kind of overlap between them. The symbolism of place in poetry constitutes a concept in which place transcends its limits as mere physical space or geographic container, to become a semantic system carrying multiple concepts and meanings that go beyond the literal to the figurative and symbolic. "Place does not appear in the text as an isolated, separate thing, or a hollow structure, carrying voids, walls, rooms, and ceilings; rather, it appears as a human activity, through human behavior, carrying the emotions, sentiments, attitudes, conceptions, and passions of those who inhabit it. It carries their small and large secrets, what is declared and what is hidden. It is the history of humanity" (Habila, 2010: 191). Thus, in this context, place transforms into a poetic sign generated from the poet's interaction with his environment, bearing his memories, anxieties, and his existential and psychological perceptions. As for the significance of place, it refers to those implicit and latent meanings that the recipient infers through the relationship of places to events, characters, and artistic visions. Symbol and significance intertwine to reveal how poetic meaning is shaped through places, which may be real or imagined, small or large, but ultimately represent keys to unlocking the text and reaching the depths of the poetic experience. Therefore, studying the symbolism and significance of place does not merely mean tracing geographical names in the text, but rather analyzing the hidden relationships that make place an independent world.
The poetry of the Iraqi poet Najah Al-Arsan comes to embody this importance particularly, as he lived in three different environments: the village, the committed city, and Baghdad, which had a significant impact on his employment of the element of place in his poetry. We see this clearly in his collections A Chance for Snow and Jacob of the Final Sadness, where place transforms from mere physical space into an entity bearing small and large histories, and the temporal moment in which the poet sees these histories. Based on this, this study aims to elucidate the symbolism and significance of place in the poetry of Najah Al-Arsan, to unveil the role of the places in which the poet lived—and in which he underwent human experiences—in shaping new perceptions and reflections that enriched his poetic experience and made his poetry a qualitative addition to the development of Iraqi and Arab poetry. Thus, primarily, monitoring how spatial presence operates in the poet's poetry, uncovering the way the spatial structure is formed within it, and clarifying the hidden relationship linking place to the poet play an important role in the current research. The article also aims to develop the reader's awareness of the patterns of appearance of the spatial element in its various forms in the poet's poetry, in an attempt to answer a set of questions.
Materials & Methods
This study comes with its academic methodology that employs the descriptive-analytical approach to uncover the most prominent and most frequently used places in Al-Arsan's poetry. Based on the title of this study, which addresses the symbolism and significance of place in the poetry of Najah Al-Arsan, and given that place is considered one of the oldest and most important givens that have entered into the production of poetic meaning, it can be said that encompassing and understanding it means encompassing the poet and understanding his poetic requirements, due to the kind of overlap between them. Moreover, the study of the symbolism and significance of place is not confined to tracing geographical names in the text, but rather to analyzing the hidden relationships that make place an independent world, and this approach enriches modern critical studies. Furthermore, revealing how the symbolism and significance of place are formed in Al-Arsan's poetry can provide a model that can be drawn upon in the study of other poetic experiences, and contributes to understanding the mechanisms of the development of Iraqi and Arab poetry in general.
Discussion & Results
The analytical section demonstrates that place in Najah Al-Arsan's poetry evolves beyond mere physical geography into a multifaceted symbolic and semantic system, where each site carries profound existential, national, and spiritual weight. Karbala transcends its historical sacredness to embody sacrifice, national unity, and resistance against oppression, often merging with the broader homeland as a living conscience; the Euphrates shifts from a material river to a powerful symbol of Iraqi identity, continuity, and shared blood, representing both life-giving sustenance and the eternal bond between the people and their land. Religious spaces like the mosque and minaret are critically examined, exposing how their sanctity is manipulated for sectarian and political agendas, contrasting their intended spiritual purpose with the reality of division. The Ark, intertextually linked to the prophetic Hadith about Imam Hussein, emerges as a beacon of salvation and unwavering loyalty, offering refuge amidst turmoil, while the well, evoking the Quranic story of Joseph, signifies isolation, trial, and existential waiting, reflecting social and psychological pressure. Finally, the Al-Alqami River, intrinsically tied to the Karbala tragedy, is personified as an active, weeping witness to martyrdom and thirst, transforming the simple act of drinking water into a perpetual, burning commemoration of injustice and devotion, thereby forging a poetic landscape where memory, identity, and existential questioning are inseparably intertwined.
Conclusion
Regarding how place transforms in Najah Al-Arsan's poetry from physical space into a symbolic semantic system, the analysis has shown that place in his poetry transcends being a mere geographic container to become a poetic sign carrying multiple referents, distributed across the psychological dimension (memories and anxieties), the religious dimension (sanctity and sacrifice), and the national dimension (belonging and resistance). This was clearly manifested in his shaping of Karbala as a symbol that expands to encompass the entire homeland, and in his transformation of the Euphrates from a physical river into a symbol of identity and continuity. As for the impact of the three environments in which the poet lived (the village, the committed city, and Baghdad) on shaping the symbolism and significance of place, the study revealed that the diversity of these spatial experiences contributed to the richness of Al-Arsan's poetic imagination. This was reflected in the variety of places recurring in his poetry, ranging from the sacred (Karbala, the mosque, the River Al-Alqami), to the natural (the Euphrates, palm trees), and the mythical (Noah's Ark, Joseph's well), thus making his spatial experience a composite one that merges the subjective with the objective, and the real with the imagined.
The study concluded that Al-Arsan employs place in an active manner that is not limited to description, but rather makes it a partner in shaping meaning and producing significance. For him, Karbala transformed from a mere sacred city into a symbol of national unity and resistance against injustice; the Al-Alqami River turned from a watercourse into a living witness to tragedy; the ship became a symbol of salvation and deliverance; and the well became a symbol of ordeal, isolation, and waiting. The study revealed the distinctiveness of Al-Arsan's approach to treating place, as he blends scientific frameworks (such as references to physics and elements), religious frameworks (intertextuality with the Qur'an and narratives), and heritage frameworks (evoking Qur'anic stories such as the story of Joseph and Noah's Ark). This grants his poetry semantic depth and multiplicity of interpretation, making it a unique model in contemporary Iraqi poetry.
The study demonstrated that place in Al-Arsan's poetry often carries antithetical connotations; it is a haven and sanctity in one instance, and tragedy and torment in another. This reflects the poet's dualistic vision of existence and shows his ability to contain contradictions within a single poetic space, which bestows upon his poetic experience its distinctiveness and makes it a qualitative addition to the development of Iraqi and Arab poetry. The study clarified that tracing sacred and historical places in Al-Arsan's poetry does not stop at historical remembrance, but rather goes beyond it to envisioning the future and drawing new visions for the nation and the homeland. He makes place a means of posing existential questions about identity, belonging, salvation, and destiny, thereby imbuing his poems with a universal human dimension that transcends the boundaries of place and time.
